Q 1. Explain the Whitehall Study in detail. What is the significance of this study? What are the criticisms of this study? 5. A student gets very sick the day before an exam and (thanks to a doctor's note) is allowed to take the test at a later date due to being bed-ridden. First describe Talcott Parson's "sick role" and then explain how the sick role provides the above student with rights and obligations. Would the sick role provide the same results if we were talking about employment rather than being a student? Lastly, how might low SES (Socio-economic status) alter the ability to follow the role?

The Whitehall study was conducted in 1967 by British researchers, with an aim to determine the social determinants of health. For this purpose they chose the group of civil servants, and studied the different men of different social classes in this occupation. They focused on one occupational factor so as to compare the findings with other groups. After the study was completed it was found that the men who composed the lower ranks of the jobs and thus were of low social rank were the patients of common illness such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems and stress and also had higher mortality rates when compared with people of high social rank.
